Study guide for test #3 - 70 pts

You will have 20 points worth of multiple choice questions which will test your knowlege of the images from the Western and Cross-cultural and Contemporary slide lists and your ability to relate them to their cultures and ethnic groups. Know the stylistic categories of the western works, the possible styles for the cross-cultural comparisons, and the ethnic groups of the contemporary artists.

 WESTERN STYLES  CROSS-CULTURAL  CONTEMPORARY
  Ancient   Mayan  Mexican and Latino/a
  Medieval   Egyptian  Native American
  Renaissance    African American
  Baroque    Asian American
  Modern

You will have one 10 point essay in which you will be asked to consider the style of several of the Western works and to place it in one of the quadrants of the grid we discussed:

You will need to consider what features of the art caused you to place it where you did.

You will have one 10 point essay in which you will be asked to discuss the way in which the work reacts to the Western tradition. What issues does it raise? Does it challenge the Western tradition, or recontextualize it? Is it using humor? Is it making direct reference to a previous work? Works will be taken from the following:

Betye Saar Liberation of Aunt Jemima, 1972

Chicago Dinner party 20th c. Modern

Ben Sakoguchi How to tell the Difference 1980's

You will have two 15-point essays dealing with art which draws on the cultures we have studied. Each will be a comparison essay in which you will compare and contrast the way the artists use their heritages. You should look at the way they use style and subject matter and how symbols drawn from various cultures have been used. How are they relating to the cultural traditions (including Western culture)? Are they dealing with questions of identity? Are they using cultural symbols in a straightforward way or are they using them in a satirical way? Are they reclaiming stereotypical images? The aspects that are most important to the essay will be determined by the works.

Comparisons will be drawn from the following works:

Yolanda Lopez, Guadalupe Triptych, detail of self-portrait

Frida Kahlo, Self-portrait on the Borderline

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Paper Dolls for a Post Columbian World with Ensembles Contributed by the US Government

Arthur Amiotte Prince Albert 1989
