As stated on the syllabus, your test will be worth 70 points.
You will have multiple choice questions worth a total of 20 points. These will ask you to identify slides on display by the culture and display a knowledge of how they were used in their culture. Possible cultures:

You will have three 10-point essays in which you will be asked to attribute one of the slides to a culture and discuss in what ways it is typical of the culture. Consider:
The use of the work in relation to religion and society. (Review power vs. display)
The subject matter or theme of the work and how it relates to its society.
The interpretation of the work and/or the medium within its society.
The style of the work and how it is typical of that culture.

You will have one 5-point essay in which you will be asked to consider the Western aesthetic approaches to art:

You will read a reaction to the work and decide which approach the person is taking. You will then be asked to define this approach and discuss the aspects of the work of art that the reaction emphasizes. Possible works:

You will have one 10-point essay in which you will be asked to discuss how two objects reflect both continuity and change in African art. You will need to consider the changes and the similarities in terms of technique and materials, style, subject matter. Look for African works which reflect both traditional and contemporary trends.
You will have one 5-point essay in which you will be asked to write about an unknown slide. What can you say about this work based upon what you have learned. If you have studied for the rest of the test you will have no problem on this one.
