Study guide for test #1

 

As stated on the syllabus, your test will be worth 70 points.

You will have multiple choice questions worth a total of 20 points. These will ask you to identify slides on display by the culture and display a knowledge of how they were used in their culture. Possible cultures:

 Olmec  Native American - Early cultures
 Teotihuacán   Native American - Southwest
 Maya  Native American - Northwest Coast
 Aztec  Native American - Arctic
   Native American - Plains
   Native American - Northeast

You will have three 15 point comparison essays in which you will be asked to attribute slides to their cultures and discuss specific ideas. Look at the sldies and consider which ones might be used to discuss the following topics:

the way a culture represents the cycle of life and death

the role of warfare and/or sacrifice and bloodletting within a culture

the role of leadership in relation to world view

the importance of process and ritual in the making of images

the reciprocity between human beings and the natural world

the connection between ritual , the elite, and the natural world as expressed through architecture or ceremonial space

You will have one 5-point essay in which you will be asked to discuss whether you think an object is craft or fine art. You will need to justify your answer and to include information about the object in your discussion. The image will be one of the following:

Masau'u Kachina

Yei Rug

Cradleboard with quill embroidery

Mimbres bowls
